King's Day

Today was King's Day in Amsterdam.  It was absolutely insane! It is a day where they celebrate the Queens or Kings of the Netherlands.  It is basically just a drunken free for all.  Everyone wears orange on this day so we all got new t-shirts for it.  We went and saw Dad's friend Christophe play with his band in one of the parks.  We also got to see some other bands in the park play after him.  Then we went for a walk through Vondel Park and up to the city center.

The city center was absolutely insane!  There were so many people that we could hardly walk.  The canals were also packed with boats.  The boats had people dancing and were playing loud music.  It was really interesting to see all the different costumes that people were wearing on the boats.  There was also garbage EVERYWHERE.  The garbage cans were so full that nothing else could fit in them so people just started throwing empty beer cans on the ground.  The garbage really grossed me out.  Over all we had a really fun time on King's day, but we are super tired now!

Flowers

My favorite day every week is when we get to go to the flower shops and pick out some new flowers for our kitchen table.  We usually get tulips but today I got these instead.  We also got a new vase that was made in Delft.  I think its so pretty all together!!!! I also got to go to the chocolate shop today after lunch.  The chocolate here is so good I could eat it until I got sick.

Delft

On Saturday morning the 4 of us went to a town called Delft.  It it about a 45 minute train ride from Amsterdam.  One of the the people that Dad works with lives here, his name is Bart.  In Delft we first went to a place where they make the famous blue pottery.  We got to see some people painting the pottery.  We also got to see the factory room where they assemble and fire everything.  It was really cool.  Also in the building they had a large collection of old pottery.  At the end of the tour there was a shop where you could buy some of the pottery.  We decided not to purchase anything because it was super duper expensive.  Some of the things in there were 30,000 euros.

After going to the pottery place we went to an Italian restaurant for lunch.  Bart's wife met us there and ate with us.  The food was really good.  Some of the stuff I had never had before.  I also got to have some tiramisu for dessert and a latte. It was so delicious!

After lunch we walked over to the new church.  The new church in Delft is the most famous church in the entire country.  We got to climb to the top of the tower which was really crazy.  We had to walk up a winding stair case.  The steps were about 1.5 feet wide which made it really difficult when you met someone coming the other direction.  After hiking about 400 steps we made it to the top.  The view from the top was amazing!  We could see all of Delft and we could even see the buildings in Rotterdam and The Hague.  However I was a little freaked out at the top because we were so high up and the railing was not even up to our waist.  The balcony we were standing on was only about 2 feet deep and there were people trying to get past each other.  I was happy once we got back down to the main floor.

The inside of the church was also amazing.  It had a really cool pipe organ that someone was playing while we were there.  Also below the floors in a crypt all the Kings and Queens of The Netherlands are buried.  All of the future Kings and Queens will be buried there as well.

After going to the New Church we went to the Old Church in Delft.  It is a really beautiful building as well.  The tower of the church is leaning because it is so old.  They don't ring the big bell because they are afraid that the vibrations might cause the tower to collapse.  After we finished looking at the church we went back to Bart's house.  His wife made us a supper yummy dinner.  And then we came back to Amsterdam on the train.  The train ride home was very fun because we got to ride past all of the tulip fields.  I didn't get any pictures of them tho because the train was going too fast and it made the pictures blurry.

Spain

Last weekend the 4 of us went to Spain.  It was absolutely beautiful!  It was warm and sunny every day we were there.  We spent the first day on the beach and by the pool.  Ellie got sunburned pretty bad but, now it has turned into a lovely tan.

On the second day we went horse back riding through the hills around our hotel.  It was so pretty.  We could see the ocean and the city really well from the top of the hills.

On the third day we went to Gibraltar.  Gibraltar is an English colony about 2 hours from Malaga. In Gibraltar we got to go inside some caves.  The caves were really cool.  We also got to drive through some tunnels that the British military dug out. However, our favorite part were the monkeys.  They were so cute.  They liked to climb on people, we all had a monkey sitting on top of our head and shoulder at one point.  The monkeys also like to eat snacks.  We saw one of the adult monkeys steal a pack of crackers out of a woman's purse.  One of the monkeys also climbed into our van and sat on top of the steering wheel and started honking the horn.  It was so funny.

Muiderslot

On Saturday afternoon the four of us went to see a medieval castle.  The castle is located about 15 kilometers from Amsterdam in a town called Muiden.  It was built in 1280.  It has a large mote built around it, which is really cool.  There were lots of rooms in the castle that you could go into.  They also had armor and other things that you could look at.  We had a great time!

This is the outside of the castle.
